Course in Management Control

Objectives of the course

The object of the course is to provide controllers with an opportunity of enriching their competencies and tools, in the light of recent changes that have characterised planning and management control systems within the field of theoretical research as well as business contexts. The controller is asked to play a role that goes beyond the traditional accounting position. He is expected to acquire those competencies and tools in order to measure business activities and to converse with managers about competition and management matters, providing managers with tools for a correct interpretation of the critical factors for competitive, social, financial and economic success. In order to accomplish this task, a thorough study of traditional tools is integrated with the analysis and experimentation of their use in line with the most innovative ways of application.

The course, through teaching methods based on a balanced use of theoretical models and concrete case studies, proceeds to show the operating problems relevant to the use of traditional tools of planning and control (cost accounting systems, budgeting systems, reporting systems), not only within the operating dimension of managing different types of enterprises (manufacturing, services and commercial), in line with the most innovative trends on the following matters:

The strategic dimension, that is the capability of management control systems to become effective tools in order to support monitoring and managing the key factors for a competitive advantage;

The behavioural dimension, that is the impact of management accounting data on behaviour and motivations of those people operating within the firm;

The environmental dimension, represented by the capability of planning and control systems to focus management attention on the one hand on relationships between environmental choices and ecological impact, on the other hand on economic and financial performances.

In order to provide an overview of problems of planning and control systems implementation, the course will deal with matters concerning the choice of the most consistent data processing supports and their use within different business contexts.
